Hollywood “Valentine’s Day” Movie Premiere Features 15,000 Colombian Roses

| Colombian roses have long played a starring role in Valentine’s and Mother’s Day
bouquets in the United States. Now, Colombian roses are also taking center stage at
other major American events, including Hollywood premieres, such as “Valentine’s
Day,” a movie that opened in February starring Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway,
Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher and Jamie Foxx.More than 15,000 roses
were shipped from Colombia for this special occasion. |

Each of the movie’s stars received a stunning bouquet of Colombian roses; the theater in which the premiere took place was adorned with thousands of beautiful roses from the country; and more than 5,000 of these fresh flowers were given out to fans and onlookers outside the premiere venue, spreading good will with these living signs of love from Colombia – “The Land of Flowers” – straight to Hollywood. Roses are Colombia’s signature floral product, and Valentine’s Day is one of the country’s most important floral holidays, accounting for 12% to 18% of the country’s total flower sales each year.For Valentine’s Day 2010, Colombian producers exported more than 500 million flowers, mainly to the United States, but also to Canada and some European countries, with an average of 28 daily flights carrying flowers to the U.S. for this important holiday. More than 43,000 florists and supermarkets sell Colombian flowers for Valentine’s Day, and approximately 80% of all imported flowers in the U.S. come from Colombia for this special date.
For Mother"s Day, the second most important season of the year for Colombian flower growers, it is estimated that more than 1.25 million boxes of flowers are shipped from the airports of El Dorado in Bogota and Rionegro in Medellin, for this special day. Most of the boxes are filled with a variety of roses in myriad shapes and sizes of bouquets to brighten the day of millionsof mothers in the world
